Residents of the Shoubak area suffer from water scarcity- high bills for basic needs

Residents of Al-Shabak area in Al-Muftah district, Hajjah governorate, need large sums of money to obtain their water needs.

There are no surface water wells in the mountainous Al-Shabak area, and the population relies mainly on water tanker trucks from Wadi Hawsan via a very rough road.

The price of water in Al-Shabak area is the highest in Al-Muftah district, where the price of a water tanker (12 cubic meters) reaches 60,000 riyals.

Citizen Nasser Mohammed Al-Houthi confirmed that he and his family consume about 7 water units per month (7 cubic meters) and pay approximately 40-50 thousand riyals, which is a large amount that is difficult to bear.

Al-Shabak area was one of the areas that NFDHR intervened in within an integrated project in the field of water, food and health in Al-Muftah and Kaidna districts in Hajjah governorate with the support of the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF), where it established a 50-cubic-meter concrete storage tank and two pumping networks and pipes with a length of 4212 meters, in addition to supplying and installing a 39 kW solar energy pumping system, and installing 34 water troughs to distribute water to beneficiaries in 5 villages, as well as training a community committee to manage, operate and maintain the project.

1882 beneficiaries in the villages of Al-Shabak, Al-Qalaa, Al-Manfa, Al-Maswaah and Beit Al-A'nab benefit from the Al-Shabak water project.

Mohammed Nasser Al-Houthi, head of the Al-Shabak project community committee, said: "The project will provide drinking water to citizens at affordable prices, and all residents will be able to obtain their needs of clean drinking water throughout the month."

The residents of the villages of sub district Al-Shabak  will no longer have to buy drinking water from water tanker trucks at high prices, as water distribution troughs are now close to their homes and they can connect a network to their homes at very low prices and they will get their needs of clean drinking water at very affordable prices.
